The Bert rounded out my quiver of trail building tools. I was hesitant to spend so much on trail specific tools, but they make you much more productive than using your regular trail building tools, and a lot if standard landscaping tools won't take the use/abuse. I'm in New England in the woods and use a council fire rake for removing duff, a rogue hoerake for cutting down to the subsoil, and the Bert for shaping, dirt moving, finishing and there is nice overlap between the tools, and each is less effort and faster than regular tools. The Bert is really heavy duty and the handle is the sturdiest fiberglass handle I've seen. I opted for this over a travis or terracotta, because this has a better rake and dirt mover, and you won't use the pick/mattock sides of those other tools much.

Backslope Tools Bert

These are great tools. They are strong but also feel like they’re going to be very portable.

For the right soil type, Bert is great. Good for pulling pine/fir duff and some fine tuning. We pair it with a Travis and Pick Mattock. (Along with steel rake and leaf rake for final finish work. Get the longer handle! 48” was too short for most of our builders.
